The Gentle, Natural Approaches to Healing Common Women’s Health Concerns
As a Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Karen Threlkel specializes in gentle, natural approaches to healing many common women’s health concerns. When we women push ourselves too hard (sound familiar?), we can become symptomatic, suffering from exhaustion, toxicity, a suppressed immune system, digestive complaints, hormonal issues, allergies… we may not know exactly what is causing us to feel so unwell.
Dr. Threlkel takes an extensive health history, and listens both compassionately and knowledgeably to her patients, helping them carefully take stock of their lives, and defining what therapies will help lead them towards optimal health.
- digestive healing
- bioidentical and natural hormone therapy
- allergy assessment
- functional laboratory testing
- supplementation for optimal health

Why am I bloated all the time lately?
Our digestive tract acts as both an immune barrier to pathogens and to digest our food and absorb the nutrients our bodies require. It can become either a pathway to health or pathology. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be the latter: gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux, Crohn’s Disease, and Ulcerative Colitis, lack of energy or increased fatigue, chronic vaginal infections, mood shifts, weakened immune function, leaky gut/malabsorption of nutrients, skin conditions, chronic sinusitis.
Many women (and men) struggle with digestive issues. And, yes! There are often solutions and effective therapies. Functional laboratory testing — state-of-the-art lab tests that can provide valuable in-depth information — may be required to pinpoint and rule out causes, and to help determine the best course of action.
How do I know if I have hormone problems?
All of our hormones — including sex hormones, adrenal or stress hormones, and thyroid hormones — are all interconnected. We take them for granted when balanced, since they allow our bodies to function flawlessly. However, as we age, our endocrine system produces less and less hormones which can lead to complex symptoms. Symptoms may be mild or severe, and may include: hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, increased fatigue, irritability, depression or anxiety, skin changes, vaginal dryness, urinary incontinence, PMS, painful periods, low libido, reduced muscle strength, poor hand-eye coordination, poor memory, poor concentration and focus.
Depending upon your unique needs, Dr. Threlkel works with both herbal therapies and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy to restore what is missing using normal physiological amounts to help maintain good health, even as you age.
Dr. Threlkel will work with you to create a roadmap to health and schedule regular check-ups to support you along the way.
